Teenage Engineering OP-XY — Synth, Sampler & Sequencing Workstation.
If there's one thing that has defined Teenage Engineering over the years, it's their unmistakable design philosophy — minimalism combined with their own take on playful functionality. Since the release of the original OP-1 in 2011, their instruments have become instantly recognizable, combining clean aesthetics with innovative approaches to music making, always very "TE-esque".
The OP-XY follows this tradition while entering into new territory. This sleek black aluminum instrument combines a powerful sequencer, synthesizer, and sampler. Finally, a display-equipped successor to the OP-Z that addresses the workflow limitations of its predecessor while expanding its capabilities significantly.
The creative sequencer on the original OP-Z left an impression on many people who got to experience it. Here, it’s been expanded upon — a 64-step sequencer that allows you to work with 16 simultaneous tracks. Each step can be enhanced with up to 14 different modifiers - from simple note repeats to complex probability functions. It also features something TE calls "smooth parameter-locks".. which is to say, parameter-locks, “only smoother”. The new 'brain' system generates chord progressions that follow your musical ideas, making harmony exploration rather effortless.
Eight distinct synth engines provide the sound sources, complemented by three specialized samplers. With 24 voices of polyphony, the sonic palette that this instrument is capable of ranges from intricate polyrhythmic textures to massive stacked sounds. To top it off you also get two effect sends per track! Oh, and of course — live sampling is possible, either through line-in, USB-C, or with the built-in microphone.
The multi-out port is quite nice - one jack that can switch between four different output modes: Eurorack, synth, pedal, and headphone levels. This should make integration with any setup really straightforward.
The matte black aluminum construction feels rugged and solid (just like on the OP-1 Field), and with 16 hours of battery life, it's ready for some pretty lengthy off-grid sessions. A built-in speaker provides immediate monitoring, while USB-C handles audio, MIDI, and charging duties. It's sort of difficult to grasp that this tiny unassuming little instrument is like an entire workstation at your disposal. In true Teenage Engineering fashion, the OP-XY manages to pack all of this functionality into a form factor that could almost fit in a jacket pocket, fascinating!

OP-XY @Teenage Engineering
FULL GUIDE
Stockholm-based Teenage Engineering design studio stole the show about a decade ago with the ultra-portable OP-1, now become a classic. Their line of pocket operators have made their products available for every pocket (pun intended) and their recent OP-Z provides now a plethora of connectivity and possibilities: CV/gate outs, wireless tethering to a mobile phone screen, sampling and maybe more to come.
