Stable by Syntonie — A Creative Video Signal Processor and Glitch Stabilizer
Stable is a video processing tool designed to enhance, manipulate, and stabilize video signals, particularly for older formats like Composite video. It is a really nice tool to create many classic video effects and can also function as a simple color corrector. You can fine-tune basic video settings like brightness, contrast, hue, and saturation. It also allows for more creative manipulation, such as using external signals to modulate these settings, making it great for experimental video art.
As a glitch stabilizer, this tool can correct issues caused by signal distortions in older or altered video sources. For example, when the video signal is too weak or messy, it can clean it up so that modern displays like projectors and monitors can still process and show it properly without cutting out or freezing - no more blue screens! This lets you push glitch effects further without losing video integrity.
The machine is also capable of self-modulation, which allows you to feed the processed video signal back into the system to create classic feedback loops. This technique generates evolving patterns of distortion and interference, creating a constantly shifting visual landscape. Another creative option at your disposal is solarization—a visual look where the light and dark areas of the video are inverted or altered, leading to surreal, dream-like visuals.
Stable is designed to work with composite and component video and also features a chroma filtering option that sharpens HD images. While Stable can correct synchronization issues, it’s not a full Time Base Corrector (TBC). A TBC is better suited for handling heavily degraded signals from older equipment like VCRs or older video game consoles (usually, anything before 6th generation). Stable requires a relatively clean input signal to operate but serves as a solid tool for real-time video experimentation, capable of landing you deep in those moments of “glitch happens”. Check out the videos below for some nice demos of what it is capable of!
