SOMA Lyra-4 — Drone Essentials
SOMA has distilled their distinct "organismic" drone synth concept into a more compact format. The LYRA-4 takes the experimental spirit of its predecessor and packs it into a more focused four-voice instrument.
Each voice pair generates tones using a circuit design inspired by vintage organs rather than traditional VCOs. These voices respond to pitch control in a non-linear fashion, creating organic interactions between the pairs. You can switch the tone generators between sounds that resemble more classic organ tones or FM synthesis modes which expands the sonic palette from stable drones to more chaotic textures.
The modulation system combines two LFOs into what SOMA calls a Hyper LFO. This section allows both addition and multiplication of the LFO signals, generating complex modulation patterns that evolve over time. These modulations can be routed to both voice pairs and the delay section.
Speaking of delay – this is no ordinary echo effect. The delay circuit includes a self-modulation feature where the output signal affects the sample rate, creating distinctive artifacts. A distortion stage follows, with the delayed signal influencing the distortion characteristics, adding further layers of complexity to the sound.
Each voice has metal contact points that respond to touch, turning finger pressure into sound control. Light touches create gradual attacks while firm contacts produce sharp responses. The sensors even pick up variations in skin conductivity, making the physical connection between player and instrument an integral part of shaping the sound.
The LYRA-4 collects the adventurous spirit of the LYRA-8 into a more focused form. Each touch and gesture shapes an ever-evolving sonic landscape where drones, harmonics and artifacts blend into something that feels organic. A true SOMA instrument through and through — a very interesting device in other words!

Soma is Vlad Kreimer's "romantic engineering" endeavour into musical instrument design. While the Lyra-8 organismic synthesizer and the Ether wide-band receiver have already gained a bunch of adherents, the Pulsar-23 has created an unprecedented expectation.
