Pittsburgh Modular - Lifeforms Dynamic Impulse Filter

The Dynamic Impulse Filter is a lowpass gate with innovative circuit design. Instead of a vactrol, this module uses a modern analog circuit, which not only retains the sonic characteristics of the role model, but makes them editable. The result: Classic sound and extended tone shaping capabilities.
The module can be employed as a normal VCF or VCA as well. Furthermore, it is possible to use the Dynamic Impulse Filter as a generator for drum sounds.
The core of Pittsburgh’s Dynamic Impulse Filter is a two pole lowpass using a Sallen-Key topology. Its tonal character is voluminous and smooth, high resonance values lead to aggressive sounding self-oscillation. As a second component, a VCA is included in the module. The user can decide via a switch, whether to use it as a filter or an amp. A third option is to employ both assembly groups in conjunction, forming the lowpass gate. It can be triggered using the impulse input. The reaction hardly differs from a vactrol-based circuit, the Dynamic Impulse Filter features natural, drum-like sound. The Decay can be adjusted using the dynamics response potentiometer. Depending on this knob’s setting, the module is able to create powerful kicks, toms, buchla-style bongos or short zap sounds. Thanks to a CV input plus attenuator, the parameter can be modulated to create steady variations. Combined with the self-oscillation, the Dynamic Impulse Filter is able to generate a broad range of drum sounds on its own. The response output allows the user to control external, vactrol-based circuits.
