The Noise Ataraxic Iteritas Alia is a voltage-controlled digital oscillator that specializes in retro sounds of the 90s.
56k anyone? The Ataraxic Iteritas Alia is an extended version of the Ataraxic Translatron from Noise Engineering. This was a linear feedback shift register oscillator that could easily imitate the wonderful sound of classic gaming consoles and arcade games, but is no longer in production.
The Ataraxic Iteritas Alia expands this sound palette with low-frequency basses, metallic spheres and humorless-aggressive digital sounds a la fax machine.
The sound creation begins with one of three bit tables shaped by variable interpolation, then scrolled through, amplitude modulated, folded and distorted by the CV controllable front panel controls. By using a variable sampling rate (a multiple of the fundamental frequency), the aliasing is aligned to the harmonics of the sound.
The pitch control (push-button functionality of the encoder) can be used for coarse and fine tuning of the pitch and, thanks to a 1/V/Oct input, can also be used for tonal playing. The Noise knob shifts the sound in time and modulates it with white noise, creating an aggressive sound with a "broken edge". The Comb control amplifies the higher harmonics when turned to the left and the lower harmonics when turned to the right. Shape refines the interpolation between the waveforms and corresponds almost exactly to a waveform sweep from triangle to sawtooth to square, which is subjected to a gentle, asymmetrical fold using the soft fold pot below. The Waveform control is used to blend between the waveforms of these bit tables (selectable via the Mod switch) and when the Time Mod pot is activated, PWM or Hard Sync-like sounds are created, which become phaser-like sounds when modulated. The aforementioned Mod switch skips through the waveforms of the three bit tables, whose sound can be refined via Shape/Waveform. The frequency range of the oscillator is determined via the range switch between bass, alto and treble. The pitch is shifted in relation to the bass mode by either two (alto) or four octaves (treble). The sync input enables an osc reset on the rising edge.
Alia (a sea creature or a derivation of Halia, the Greek word for salt) is a 10HP oscillator platform that has something for every Eurorack fan. Buy one module and get the functionality of many! By simply swapping firmware via USB between modules in the Alia universe, your Alia module can become, among other things, the all-purpose drum weapon Basimilus Iteritas or take the form of Manis Iteritas, a dark sound machine somewhere between industrial, EBM and techno. Or perhaps something that doesn't even exist yet? Mysterious new firmwares are surely already in the works. Who knows what will happen?
Features:
- digital oscillator for the Alia series based on the Ataraxic Iteritas
- Lofi specialist for videogame/arcade sounds and fax/modem-like sounds
- Extensive sound control options via knobs or switches for almost all parameters
- 12 patch points (including sync out)
- Can be equipped with other firmwares from the Alia series via the Noise Engineering Customer Portal via USB

Manual
If you can get over the unpronounceable Latin names of their modules, Noise Engineering offers a wide catalog of often digitally-driven modules in a compact format. Basimilus Iteritas Alter is already a modern classic that covers all your bass and percussion needs. Noise Engineering are based in sunny Los Angeles, California.
