A classic from the VCV universe: VCV RANDOM is a Eurorack module by NANO that generates random voltages.
VCV RANDOM offers 4 outputs for random CV values. All 4 outputs are dependent on an internal sample & hold circuit and output these voltages in different ways.
Sample & Hold modules are very simple yet effective modules for generating random voltages. The module feeds on a signal, with the classic being white noise. When you send triggers to the module, it outputs the current volt value of the sample signal with each incoming trigger - so, with white noise, it always outputs a random value.
VCV RANDOM utilizes precisely this principle and adds additional useful functions to it. There is an internal clock, so you don't need external triggers. However, you can of course also use triggers generated elsewhere. The same goes for the sample signal! So far, pretty normal, but that's where the similarities to "ordinary S&H modules" end because VCV RANDOM now gives you a total of 4 values. These values are all based on the same output signal but are differently shaped. There is a Step output, reminiscent of bit reduction, a linear and an exponential output, as well as a Smooth output. LIN, EXP, and SMTH resemble slewing and allow for very different curves. All outputs can be changed using the Shape parameter. Additionally, you can route the linear output to the CV inputs of the module via a rear switch to generate even more randomness!
Furthermore, there is the Probability parameter, which allows you to adjust the probability with which incoming/generated triggers reach the sample & hold stage. Even more randomness! RND acts as a crossfader between the last and the new random value. Gentle fluctuations and extreme jumps are all no problem and are easily adjustable. The offset switch allows you to choose whether the CV values are in the +/-5V or 0-10V range, and the Trig output gives you a trigger with every generated value.
