Metasonix Triple Sublime Asseater (Buchla/4U)

The Metasonix Triple Sublime Asseateris a somewhat extreme distortion unit. As was to be expected from this company. This is the first 4U module for the Buchla format from Metasonix. It combines the RK2 VCA, RK3 waveshaper/mangler, and RK4 bandpass filter/VCO into a unified device capable of producing raw, filthy distortion that ventures into a realm typically beyond the reach of traditional Buchla systems. Let’s not call it distortion …instable, fuzzy textures…maybe!?

 

On the top is the RK2 XS-VCA. Technically a VCA…but… it's a vacuum tube-powered brute with quite a range. With a gain of approximately 30 dB, it can morph from a gentle tube preamp to overdrive. Then there is the feedback knob. 

 

Next, there's the RK3 Ringer Shaper. This module distills Metasonix’s ethos into its purest form: raw, unfiltered, and unpredictable. Using a 14BL11 Compactron tube, the RK3 mangles waves, injecting erratic pulses and creating something akin of distortion and ring modulation. As everything from Metasonix this module defies convention and accepted behavior.

 

Finally you get the RK4 Filter/VCO that combines the beauty of simplicity with the allure of the unknown. It uses a triode-pentode in a Wien-bridge circuit, delivering a sine-wave oscillator. When there is a signal present at the input, you get a BP response of sorts. While this is nothing unusual, also here you will encounter the typical “metasonix range-non-linearities” aka something unexpected is happening when you turn the knob(s).

 

The Triple Sublime Asseater [200R]is three Metasonix circuits smashed in one module. It demands a reliable power supply and a bit of patience to master its peculiarities. For those looking to push the boundaries of distortion, it is maybe a dream come true — just be prepared for its high power consumption. A module that will tests limits.

 

Note from Manufacturer:

pre-2005 Buchla 200 and some DIY cabinets MIGHT NOT have enough current capacity to run this module, or might not have the correct connector pinout. Install it in a 200 series cabinet at your own risk.
