With the ring modulator, two signals are multiplied by each other, resulting in the difference and sum of the two sources. If both signals oscillate in the audio range, the result almost always leads to disharmonic metallic or bell-like sounds. If one of the frequencies is below the audible audio range (<20Hz) you get a tremolo, similar to the good science fiction sounds of the seventies. The frequency shift is similar to ring modulation, but produces only an upper or lower spectral sideband, while ring modulation produces both sidebands.
