Vocoders

In the original military context, vocoders were used for voice encryption and to reduce the transmission bandwidth of an audio signal. However, the properties of a vocoder were soon transformed in the musical context to be able to modify speech and singing polyphonically. Essentially, a vocoder allows the modulation of an instrument by splitting an input signal into several frequency bands whose envelopes are applied to the volume of the respective frequency bands of a second signal.
