A classic function for organic sound in Eurorack synthesizers: the A-101-2 Vactrol Lowpass Gate from Doepfer.
Lowpass gates are a concept from Buchla synthesizers and make up a large part of the sound of these instruments. Typically, a lowpass gate consists of a lowpass filter and VCA, both of which can be controlled together. Consequently, the overtone content and amplitude are reduced at the same time, which is also the case with many classical instruments. This gives your sounds a natural timbre, ideal for percussion and FM bells.
Unlike other LPGs, the A-101-2 has two CV inputs and two gate inputs as well as a resonance parameter(!). This extends to self-oscillation and allows for wild sound colorations. The A-101-2 tends to sound rather harsh, but can also intervene gently in your sounds.
The two gate inputs let you get the module going without any fuss. You can switch the module to use it only as a VCF or VCA.
A great module that provides a classic synthesizer module in clear Doepfer style.
