Buchla - 225e MIDI Decoder / Preset Manager
- Order number: 190085
The module 225e combines an extremely comprehensive MIDI to CV converter with the Buchla 200e Preset Manager, which is required for saving and recalling presets. The module can be used to generate control voltages and pulses depending on MIDI signals. However, MIDI data can also be sent directly to certain modules via an internal bus system without the need for patch cables.
The module can distribute the data received at the MIDI input to three different bus systems: the internal busses, the note message busses and the controller busses. The internal A-D busses send incoming MIDI data internally to corresponding modules.
- Note-on and Note-off messages are sent to the 281e and 281h modules.
- Velocity information is transmitted internally to the 292e and 292h modules.
- Pitch or note number information is transmitted to modules 259e and 261e.
- MIDI clock messages are also sent to modules 223e, 250e, 251e and 252e.
The Note-Message Buses E-H convert incoming note signals into a corresponding pitch control voltage, a CV for velocity and Note-On Pulse with sustain information.
The controller busses J-K are intended for MIDI control changes and MIDI clock conversion. Each bus has two outputs and works in controller or clock mode.
In Controller mode, MIDI Control Changes (MIDI CCs), Pitchbend or Aftertouch can be assigned to the outputs.
In Clock mode, the outputs send pulse signals based on clock divisions to the incoming MIDI clock. These divisions can be assigned to the outputs in a very differentiated way.
The Preset Manager communicates via an internal bus system with all connected 200e modules and loads or saves their settings. Up to 30 presets can be stored. Presets can be loaded either manually or via CV. All MIDI interface parameters can be saved and recalled in the Preset Manager.

Pioneering synthesizer design since the mid 1960s with Morton Subotnick and the San Francisco Tape Center, Don Buchla has been responsible for the invention of the sequencer, low pass gate, random voltage generators and the complex oscillator, among others. Shortly before his passing in 2016, his rights were acquired by Australian holding company BEMI (2012-2017) and since 2018 is operated by Eric Fox of Buchla USA, based in Minnesota. Buchla USA offers the whole 200e series catalog and boats, as well as the iconic Music Easel.
