A legend! The RES-4 is a combination of 4 resonant filters. An inspiring Tool made in Cwejman high quality.
Wowa Cwejman's synthesizer designs have become classics. For many these modules are the pinnacle of Eurorack, to which they are very attached. A unique combination of interface design, high-quality components, clean yet characterful sound, a lot of engineering experience and precise tactility have been/are/will be an ear-opening experience for many!
RES-4 is a modified VCEQ-3 and gives you an array of four variable-width bandpass filters through which you can run your sound. Compared to its cousin, the parameter ranges are significantly larger, allowing for more extreme sounds. A great module.
The four filters all have individual parameters for setting the frequency, bandwidth and level. You also get CV inputs for all these parameters. EVERY parameter is CV controllable, making precise patching possible with this all in all very precise module.
Bandwidth is the RES-4's resonance and can act as a kind of decay in some situations. Thre is no full Self-oscillation, but you also will not miss it.
The master CV inputs allow you to influence the amplitude and frequency of all 4 filters simultaneously. This means that chord and cluster transpositions or complex filter sweeps are no problem.
The two audio outputs BP and Notch can be used simultaneously and provide (subtly?) different results. The bandpass output emits the sum of all filters in phase and the notch output outputs filters 1 and 3 in phase and filters 2 and 4 inverted. This results in a different frequency response with differently positioned notches for the bandpass and notch. Process the two outputs differently and place them left and right in the panorama to create stereo-like situations.
A bypass switch lets you quickly jump back to the initial sound, which is sometimes really practical. In general, all Cwejman modules are shielded against interference, protected against reverse polarity and include calibration options on the rear panel (for experienced users).
The sound of RES-4 ranges from clean to driven. As a unit it is great for a wide variety of percussive elements. Sculpted kick drums, sharp tonal percussion and generally "unheard" sounds are definitely the specialty of this module. You could also call RES-4 an additive percussion module/resonator/formant filter.
For each channel, you can work with amplitude modulation (AM), BW (Q) and/or frequency modulation (FM) in a very nuanced way. Thanks to the CV inputs, subtle timbre changes per stage are possible, which can then be mixed with the other bands! RES-4 is a sensitive module that reacts to the smallest changes. Slight pot turns and fine modulations deliver amazing results.
An unusual module that will accompany you for a very long time and with which you will always discover new aspects.
Please note: Unlike other manufacturers, the red stripe on Cwejman's ribbon cables marks the positive supply voltage +12 V, not the negative! This document on the Cwejman Japan website provides more detailed information.

The history of Cwejman goes back to the 1970s with a bespoke fully analog synthesizer called the Synthra. After a long hiatus due to the heyday of digital synths, they returned in 1998 seeing that the interest in analog modular synths was catching up. Ever since, Cwejman has been a synonym of uncompromising engineering aimed to provide outstanding sound quality.
