The SeM20st is the stereo evolution of Bubblesound's classic SeM20 module. This is a top choice for stereo filtering and stereo phasing in Eurorack.
The classic Bubblesound SEM20 has been around for about 15 years now (or even longer) and it can still be found in many setups, because it is a timeless filter with a rich and powerful sound.
When you look back at the description of the original version you immediately get why this is a Eurorack classic: A classic 2-pole state-variable multimode filter based on the Oberheim SEM with the resonance section of the MS20 and the input section modified to overdrive like the OSCar. This filter can create very smooth sounds reminiscent of Oberheim synthesizers and aggressive, overdriven acidy goodness. We get an even more versatile and promising sonic playground when we now add the attribute “Stereo” to the equation, right? Yes!
While there is also the Dual SeM20 filter available, the SeM20st is the first iteration of the Bubblesound filter that is especially designed for stereo applications and the first that has faders.
The SeM20st is designed to be used with stereo signals, but it also brings all the tools to create stereo signals from mono sources. This makes the SeM20st a versatile option for all kinds of filter duties. The left-side inputs are normalized to the right, not only the audio input, but also the CV-inputs. This lets you transform a monophonic input into a rich stereo signal! The CV inputs are equipped with attenuverters. Together with the normalization you can create a wide stereo signal when feeding the module a mono audio signal and a single LFO, or any other CV. Simply set the attenuverters of each channel differently, maybe invert one side.
The Resonance segment is the same as in the predecessor, the SEM20, yet with a notable enhancement in the form of a CV-In for Resonance.
The output section gives you more than the three usual output options of most multimode filters, Low-, Band,- and Highpass. Additionally you get a Notch filter output per side, with a single Notch balance pot that sweeps from Lowpass to Highpass. With some suitable modulation you get some very pleasant stereo phasing.
