STG Soundlabs – Founded by one of the true pioneers of the Eurorack and modular synth scene.

Eric Williamson has not only developed modules for various formats and his own brands, he is also the founder of Knobcon – a legendary synthesizer event in the USA. By the way, the name says it all! Eric aka Suit and Tie Guy is always easy to spot. He’s the guy in the striking suit and matching tie – a man, a brand. Suit & Tie Guy cuts a fine figure not only as a manufacturer of outstanding analog modular synthesizers but also on stage. Further down you’ll find a video of an ambient dub live set.

We’ve known Suit & Tie Guy for a long time and greatly value his products. The Sea Devils Filter and Post Lawsuit Filter are beyond any doubt. Both designs are based on classic models with a very distinct character. We won’t go into detail here - what matters is that these modules sound (and look, I might add) absolutely excellent.

One of my (Timm’s) favourite modules from STG Soundlabs is the Wave Folder! Based on a diode design by Haible, this wavefolder is refreshingly different from the otherwise rightly acclaimed Serge or Buchla-based designs. (…and here come those dreaded adjectives meant to describe sound) We would describe it as smooth and high-quality, less extreme and always easy to control.

Like other STG Soundlabs modules, the Wave Folder not only has excellent sonic qualities but also an outstanding spatial layout that keeps it easy to operate. There’s a vintage touch in your rack – more room for your fingers, more air for inspiration, and simply more fun tweaking knobs! For those who don’t care about maximising functional density in their rack, STG Soundlabs modules offer tools you can really work with.

Looking at the Envelope Generator, it quickly becomes clear that these are not just off-the-shelf modules. The concept of a very complex modulator with many segments and multiple simultaneous outputs is something we otherwise mainly know from Verbos and, to some extent, ALM Busy Circuits and Mutable Instruments. In any case, the Envelope Generator module shows an interesting creative and versatile component within the STG Soundlabs designs. Other modules are primarily solid, good, and straightforward, such as their VCAs or mixers. These simpler STG Soundlabs modules combine with the more unusual ones to create an extremely interesting system that we can wholeheartedly recommend, also as a meaningful addition to existing setups.
