Not your ordinary VCA! AtoV’s cDVCA or class-D VCA is also a Waveshaper, Distortion, Filter, Oscillator and will add a lot of character to any sound.
Class-D amplification technique is known from “HiFi” amps. It converts an audio signal into a high-frequency PWM-signal, scales it and converts it back again. It aims to be relatively artifact free….but…cDVCA lets you toy around with this process. The frequency of the PWM-signal can be modulated or sequenced with the 1V/oct input and lowered into the audio (sub-20kHz) range. This is something definitely not desirable in normal class-D use and gives you a highly unusual method of waveshaping your signal. With the Drive knob you can dial in some clipping by messing with the class-D process. All of this sounds brilliant in all registers and sometimes incredible harsh. The gentle 1-pole Filter just before the Output lets you tame the results and is - same as all other parameters - CV-controllable. With this module, class-D should stand for classy distortion.
Tip: With no audio-signal patched in, the cDVCA is also an unconventional synth voice (Osc-VCA-VCF). A slowrunning CV-signal patched into Input will lead to PWM.
